HFDlogo3redThe Croatian Philological Society / Hrvatsko filološko društvo was founded in 1951 at Zagreb University by members of the Philosophy Department who were interested in the study of philology. Originally interested in literary theory and history under the guidance of Zdenko Škreb, CPS expanded its reach beyond noted Croatian scholars to other international scholars, particularly from the country that was previously known as Yugoslavia. Their interests also expanded to other theoretical ideas, including formalism, structuralism, and phenomenology and the related fields of psychology and linguistics. Today the CPS has expanded its interests to include rhetoric and sponsors a biennial conference in honor of Ivo Škarić, a seminal and prolific Croatian scholar whose interests and academic activities stemmed from several interests, including phonetics, linguistics, mass communication, speech, language and rhetoric.
